DMX / Art-Net
DMX and Art-Net are both lighting control protocols, but DMX is a simpler, older standard, while Art-Net is a more modern protocol that transmits DMX data over an Ethernet network. Art-Net allows for multiple DMX universes to be transmitted over a single Ethernet cable, making it more scalable and efficient for larger lighting setups.
Showtec Net-2/5 or:and Enttec devices can be used in combination with QLC+ to control lights that accept DMX-Art-Net protocols.
If you want to work with a DMX-ArtNet device, it’s important that both the computer as well as the adapters have fixed IP addresses and Subnet masks.
Computer (Windows and Mac): 10.101.0.121 / 255.255.0.0
DMX-ArtNet device: 10.101.0.120 / 255.255.0.0
It is important that every device has its own unique IP address, where the first two sets of numbers between the points are the same (in this case: 10.101.x.xxx) and the last number is different on each device.
Showtec NET-2/5
The Showtec NET-2/5 (or NET-2/3) are modern network routers that convert ArtNet and SACN data into DMX-512 signals and vice versa. A maximum of 1024 channels can be transmitted using a simple CAT5 cable.
Enttec USB
Alternatively, if you need more than one DMX-Art-Net Controller, the Farb licht Labor (get in contact with Marcus Pericin) possesses some Enttec DMX USB interfaces that can be easily used to control lights.
QLC+ Configurations
In QLC+, navigate to Inputs/Outputs and select the ArtNet Device with the previously entered IP Address as your output.
Now, add light fixtures depending on your light setup.
It is very important to note that QLC+ has a default universe number of 0, whereas Net-2/3 has a default universe number of 1. Set the ‘Primary’ of the DMX output to 0 in the menu.
Go to Menu > 04. Set DMX Port > 01. DMX Port 1 > 07. Primary > 000 (instead of 001,here’s a Forum post pinpointing this issue).
